Building a Values Based Workplace

I will always remember a particular day in the staffroom of one of my previous workplaces.

Tensions were high between management and front line staff and many workers were feeling resentful and angry at our employer. One of my coworkers was standing beside me, looking up at the company’s Mission, Vision and Values statement, which was framed and hung in all work areas. She said “I feel like taking that down and smashing it on the ground. It’s means nothing to me! No one and nothing here can be trusted.”

It hurts to be in a work environment and feel that our values are challenged and compromised. In the past, I have felt that pain too. Without a values-based foundation, it is easy to disconnect and disengage from work and the people in it. At the core of this is trust.

Trust is an integral part of any organizational unit; work, family or otherwise. When trust is gone, other values go with it: communication, courtesy, acceptance, loyalty, compassion, respect, understanding, service and honesty, to name only a few.

Since then, I have presented workshops and coached in similar organizations where managers are frustrated and overwhelmed trying to figure out how to communicate, earn trust and get cooperation from their team.

Because of this experience, it has become my mission to assist managers and their teams to get back to their values so they can save time and energy resolving conflicts and use it to achieve their vision and goals.

How do I do this?
